Although I have had no formal art education, I have taken art seminars and classes from numerous talented and nationally recognized artists including Paul Jackson, Al Stine, Don Andrews, & George James. I began painting about twenty years ago as a hobby. I began teaching shortly thereafter at the “Checkered Flag Hobby Country” store in South County.   Through the years I became more and more enamored with watercolor as my favorite medium. I like to paint a variety of subjects, but I feel that portraits and florals are my specialty. I opened my own shop, a.k.a. Chique Gallery & Studio, in 2004 in Arnold, where I currently teach classes and display and sell my work and that of other local artists. I accept commissions for portraiture or other works. My paintings have been accepted and rewarded in numerous local and national juried art shows. akachique@sbcglobal.net
Marie Gross: I have a minor in Art from SEMO University. I’ve taken numerous art classes including a summer at the Kansas City Art Institute. I was a published cartoonist for eight years. I have done several shows in which I sit and draw pencil portraits of people. My husband and I have done several wall murals. I also enjoy working in oils. I make my own greeting cards. I would love to illustrate a children’s book for someone. I’m available at 636-464-5465. Prices upon request.

Lorraine Hoekel is a home grown Missouri artist. Her early career focused on watercolors, oils and multi-medias. She became quite popular with her watercolor portraits of people and animals.

Ms. Hoekel was also accepted in a St. Louis Art Museum show as a member of the Independent Artist Society. She was awarded Best of the Year from the monthly shows at the I.A.S. She has illustrations still in print for a young adult adventure series. As a member of the Woodcarvers Club she designed, carved and sold figures and animals in the round. She also placed in many of the monthly award shows

During the latest phase of her career, her medium of choice is colored pencil. She does accept some assignments on commission. Call 636-942-3501 for more information. At present she teaches colored pencil classes at the First Baptist Church of Arnold.

Janet Kraus: She is a local Jefferson County artist. Her medium of choice is Watercolor although she has done Oil Paintings and Pastels.

After Years of working as an accountant, upon her retirement she started attending classes at Jefferson College in Hillsboro studying under Jo Rezny McCredie. The people she met in her classes are still friends today.

Through Jo McCredie she was introduced to Claire Condon who made her home in Ste. Genevieve and was a big promoter of the town. She joined the Ste. Genevieve Art Guild and over the years was well received by the town, doing private commissions which have been used in locally written and produced books.

In 1999 when a group of Jefferson County artists formed their own Art Guild she immediately became involved with that group. In 2000 the Art Guild voted her the “Artist of the Year”. She has held many posts with the guild and currently holds the office of President. Her painting “Italian Wine is Fine” was awarded the Best of Show at the Jefferson County Art Guild’s 2007 show.

Plein Air painting, the production of art on site capturing the way natural light affects the atmosphere, is her favorite form of expression. She loves to paint on site letting the surrounding sights, sounds and smells of the area show through to her finished product. She loves the way watercolor has a special glow and how “happy accidents” only make her love it more.

Besides membership in the Jefferson Co. Art Guild she is a member of the St. Louis Watercolor Society. She maintains signature status with that group. Janet Kraus jkrauswcartist@charter.net
Mary Lou LaFloure: 636-937-2076 Watercolor and Pastel Paintings:

Artist Statement: Painting allows me to express through images a particular time, place or situation that has impacted me in some way. Trying to visually communicate a response to these things is an ongoing learning experience and a pleasure to pursue. I hope that other people are touched in some way when they view my work.

Foundation studies, Kansas City Art Institute, 1955-56

B.S. In Education, Webster University, 1972

Workshops with nationally recognized watercolor and pastel artists.

Signature member of the Saint Louis Watercolor Society

Member of Jefferson County Art Guild

Participation in exhibits in various locals in St. Louis and Jefferson County

Paintings in private collections.
Jane Patterson: I am basically a self-taught artist. I grew up in a small rural community on the Mississippi River with beautiful bluffs, woodlands, and fields with all the wonders of nature. Each season has its’ own beautiful palette of colors and many of my paintings are landscapes or deal with nature.

I began painting with oils in my early teen years and have since painted with acrylics, watercolor, and pastels. I’ve also been commissioned to paint wall murals in homes and businesses.

I am a charter member of the Jefferson Co. Art Guild. This organization has helped me grow as an artist. The meetings are informative and stimulating and I’ve learned so much from the other artists.

Painting: Proudly They Served (Women in Service)
The best of Art will always bring out some inner pang to understand it. It is not the history or the value that is felt deep within the soul but simple hyacinth. The poet tells us “To have breathed in the fragrance of a hyacinth, engendering waves of memories flooding in when you are unexpectedly given a little bud,” that “it can take your breath away”. Art does that to the soul.

The process of Art has always intrigued me. The paper or canvas selection, the color base and hue, the interaction of the elements, all have played their passionate game and breathed down into my soul their paroxysms. Listening to Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company, brings forth hyacinth that emboldens the stroke. Enlightening once and always that first moment that paint hit brush, that finger pressed passionately the shutter release. What majestic light is inhaled and comes forth on that plane.

It is the journey and not the finish that determines the end. The finish can be anywhere, but the end is when the process is complete. Some journeys never finish, some are done before they start; only the process can tell you when you’re there.

The Art is what it is, it is the creative instinct expressed, it is that inspired journey ended, and it moves the soul. Oh glorious color, wonderful tone, and you hue and contrast, play on the canvas that I call my heart. Make me to fall in love with you afresh each time I grasp that stick to mark our love, to press that infinite button to capture God’s light forever. jim@jimtruephotography.com
